It was the residence of the Mikami family of “Mottoiya,” one of the leading merchant families in the town of Miyazu during the Edo period, who operated a sake brewery, a shipping business, and a thread wholesaler. The exterior features beautiful white walls, while the formal living quarters and other rooms are lavishly appointed with the highest quality materials.
The garden is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by Kyoto Prefecture and was designed to offer a splendid view from the inner parlor.
