# History and nature of Uji

1-1 Kotosaka ~ Kosho-ji Temple,
the first monastery of the Soto school

Kotosaka, the approach to Kosho-ji Temple, the first monastery of the Soto school, is known for its autumn leaves. Kotosaka was named after the shape of the slope resembling koto (Japanese harp) and the sound of the stream that passes on the side. It is known for its green maple leaves in early summer and colored leaves in autumn.

Kosho-ji Temple was built in 1233 by Dogen Zenji upon his return from the Yuan dynasty. It was later reconstructed in Uji by Nagai Naomasa, the lord of the Yodo Castle. You can try meditating or copying sutras at the temple.

1-2 Mt. Daikichi Observation Deck
~ Ujigami Shrine

You can go up to Mt. Daikichi Observation Deck from the side of Kosho-ji Temple or Ujigami Shrine. The trail is easy and popular as an exercise and walking spot for the locals. It only takes 20–30 minutes to reach the top (triangular point). The observation deck offers a panoramic view of Uji City.

After climbing up from the side of Kosho-ji Temple, climb down to the side of Ujigami Shrine. Registered as a World Heritage Site, the main hall of Ujigami Shrine is known to be the oldest existing shrine building. The hall of worship features rare Sugaruhafu-style roofs known to have remained since the Heian era.

2-1 Uji Tea Ceremony Hall Takumi-no-Yakata

At Takumi-no-Yakata, Japanese tea instructors explain to you the history and production method of Uji tea, as well as how to brew it deliciously. Reservation is required for the tea brewing class in which you can taste Uji gyokuro, Uji matcha, and Uji sencha. Uji tea is also sold at the shop.

2-2 Tsuen Tea

“My family has been running a tea shop for a long time, even before the time of my father and grandfather,” says Tsuen Yusuke, the 24th generation owner. 3-1 The Tale of Genji Museum

You can enjoy the museum even if you don’t know The Tale of Genji. The exhibits include a model of Hikaru Genji’s residence and a real-size replica of an ox cart. There are also interactive exhibits and a screening of an original movie. As you go around the museum, you will want to know more about the world of The Tale of Genji.

3-2 Byodoin Temple

A World Heritage Site, Byodoin is known for its Hoo-do (“phoenix hall”) drawn on 10-yen coins. Getting back the brilliance from the time of establishment in the major renovation in 2014, the Hoo-do evokes the worship of Pure Land Buddhism by nobles who hoped for paradise. At Byodoin, you can also see many National Treasures including the statue of Amida Buddha, the main image.
