Staying at the “Fugen-ji Ito Residence,” a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property ~A Stay in a 444-Year-Old Historic Mansion~
The Ito Residence at Fugen-ji Temple, a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Stay at this historic family home with a 444-year history.
The village of Fugen-ji, located in Kyotanabe, Kyoto, is situated near Kannon-ji Temple—home to the National Treasure Eleven-Faced Kannon—and Shuon-an Ikkyu-ji Temple, associated with Zen Master Ikkyu. The residence of the Ito family, who have lived on the same land for 444 years, was designated a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2026. The main house and storehouse contain calligraphy by Katsu Kaishu, award certificates from the Chicago World’s Fair (1893) belonging to Kumao Ito, the eighth head of the family—a Meiji-era industrialist and member of the First Imperial Diet—as well as items associated with Ito Jakuchu and a late Edo-period military helmet. These treasures, passed down through generations, are still carefully preserved today. At night, rest in the historic tatami rooms enveloped in silence, and spend your time experiencing an “authentic Japanese home” that is part of daily life—not just something viewed through museum glass.

Area & City/Town Introduction (Kyotanabe City)
Kyotanabe City is a town where nature and history coexist in harmony. Known as one of Japan’s leading producers of “Gyokuro,” a premium tea, the city has nurtured a rich history and culture, home to landmarks such as “Shuon-an Ikkyu-ji”—affectionately known as “Ikkyu’s Temple”—and “Daigodo Kannon-ji,” which houses the National Treasure, the Standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Statue. It is also a vibrant city home to Doshisha University. In April of Reiwa 8, the “Spiral View Terrace,” designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, was completed on Mount Kananbi. We invite you to experience the charm of Kyotanabe—a blend of traditional elegance and modern appeal.
