Fukuju-en Yamashirokan
"Preserving the Culture of Tea Merchants": Fukuju-en's Interactive Tea Theme Park
This is a vast, hands-on theme park spanning approximately 20,000 square meters, established by Fukujuen—a long-established Uji tea merchant also known for “Suntory Iyemon”—in Kizugawa City, Kyoto Prefecture, where the company was founded. On “Tea Wholesaler Street,” which retains the atmosphere of the Kamikoma area—a thriving hub for tea distribution since the Edo period—visitors can explore historic houses and exhibits of tea-processing machinery to experience the history of tea. Meanwhile, at the modern “Iyemon Tea Garden,” beautifully manicured, iconic tea fields stretch out, offering a vision of a tea-centered lifestyle for the future. Within the park, visitors can enjoy authentic hands-on programs such as grinding matcha with stone mills and making traditional tea sweets. They can also savor ochazuke (tea-soaked rice) and Uji tea-based desserts at the tea house, making this a spot where everyone—from children to adults—can spend the entire day immersing their five senses in the charms of tea.
